A Soldier’s Story is a novel or mythomemoir that looks back on the author's early army service and his time living in Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, and on Hunter Liggett Military Reservation in the most excellent state of California in the early 1970s. Interwoven throughout are flashbacks of his Vietnam wartime experiences much the same way as these flashbacks have occurred throughout his life.
Two more volumes, A Fisherman’s Story and An Artist’s Story draw on his thirty-year U.S. Army and Army Reserve career. The Fish Story he tells in one part harmony in Volume II is the reason he wrote this triliogy over a twelve-year time frame. As his army career culminated with his being appointed as the Army’s Artist, Volume III covers how that happened.

A Soldier Story The Colonel Butch Cassidy Memoirs Book 1 eBook Gary Cassidy

A Soldier's Story, written by Gary "Butch" Cassidy is an excellent read in all respects. The details and perspectives of the events in his life put the reader right in the drivers seat with Butch. His book brings back many details I forgot when I was on active duty during the Vietnam War. Cassidy puts the reader in the jungle with him in Vietnam. He dwells on the day to day events which allows the reader to share a real experience of being in the Boonies. Besides his excellent descriptions of his "running through the jungle" he lets the reader explore all the other events going around him during his time in Vietnam. On a more personal level we learn about the impact of the war on his marriage, his tour in a military hospital for injuries received in Vietnam, and the loss of close comrades in Nam. Cassidy expertly details not just his life on the West Coast as his military career continues, but gives a good light on how the Army was transforming into a volunteer Army. I recommend this novel to any serious military historian on Vietnam, and to anybody who wants to get a firsthand grip on what faced my generation in the 1960s and 70s. I look forward to your Volume Two! Job Well done Butch!

A Soldier Story The Colonel Butch Cassidy Memoirs Book 1 eBook Gary Cassidy Reviews

This is the first volume of what will become a trilogy. As such, it lays the groundwork for what the author will build in the continuing epic. It is the story of the author--at least the first part of that story, focused on his active duty years from time of being drafted until his release from active duty--and is told in great detail, but without ever becoming boring. I completed the 450 pages in less than two days, enjoying each page. In addition to getting into the trenches vicariously with the author, one identifies with the early years of adulthood--trying to find oneself, developing into a leader and a human being. Although I recommend this book to anyone with a taste for adventure, it really hits the mark with those who have served with the military, and especially of the draft-age baby-boomers who served, many against their own will. Those who fit that category will see much of their own life story spelled out here.
Lot's of guys have gotten the urge to write their autobiography. Many have put the time and effort in to actually get the job done. Kudos to 'em. It takes a lot of effort to put pen to paper and capture all the trivial and not so trivial stories that we think makes our life worth writing about. Then there are the small percentage of those writers who have some skills with words which make it enjoyable to read about their life. Then, every once in awhile, you will read a book which seems to come alive. A book which touches so many of your own memories, that it helps you relive similar times in your own life. Author Butch Cassidy has written that kind of story here!
For any man or woman who has served a day or a lifetime in the US Military, you will find yourself engrossed in this book! Cassidy is as real as it gets in his descriptions of events both serious and humorous. He writes with a unique style, copying no one. Stories meld from one to another in a "stream of consciousness" which makes every situation seem like we were there and experienced it ourselves! It is one of those experiences where you find yourself laughing out loud as you read of Cassidy hosting a gang of motorcycle riders at his remote ranch hideout, or being busted in the buff at a hot tub party!
Butch's antics while stationed at Ft Ord in the 1970's are priceless...an Army Officer living off post in the "high life" of Big Sur.
